Boss Dog Brewing is a passion project for owners Josh and Jason Sweet, who transformed a tired restaurant space in Cleveland Heights into a lively, modern brewery and pub that showcases their craft and offers a welcoming environment for guests who want to experience the brothers’ brews. The Sweets enlisted Richardson Design to connect the existing Boss Dog brand to the place—and to create a graphic expression that ties together the brewpub’s packaging and menu. They also wanted the graphic presentation of their young label to look established.

Boss Dog engaged Richardson to build upon the logo originally designed in a collaboration between Go Media and Boss Dog. The graphic design system connects the brewery’s various visual touchpoints; the scope of work included designing a menu and specialty packaging, such as the Crowler—an aluminum-can cousin of the growler, allowing guests to take home Boss Dog’s brews in a sealed container.

Continuity in the brand’s packaging, menu presentation, signage and interior—also a product of Richardson Design—resulted in a cohesive look and feel that is unique to Boss Dog, attractive to its target audience, and iconic in the way guests are “sharing” packaging on social media. (Instagram posts of the Crowler and beer labels confirm a fast-growing allegiance to the brand and what it stands for.)

Also, by ensuring that the graphic design vision aligned with the Sweet’s contagious energy and commitment to the venture, Richardson Design established a visual expression that is positioned to carry the brewery into an even wider market, should it expand. We can all tip back a glass to that.
